Finally found the time to finish these pieces!

Follow this link to see more print designs.

Kanji explanation:

Image 1: The bottom-left cartouche features the kanji 鳴戸, which is read naruto, meaning ‘whirlpool’. (Note: uzumaki has a similar meaning, translated as ‘maelstrom’.)

The top-right cartouche contains the kanji 古祟翻恵, loosely meaning “An ancient curse becomes a blessing”.

_____________________________________________________

Image 2: The top-left cartouche contains the symbols 龍毬, literally meaning ‘dragon’ and ‘orb’.

The bottom-right cartouche features the kanji 不憩奮励, meaning ‘Never resting, striving higher’.

_____________________________________________________

Image 3: The left cartouche features the kanji 末撓気師, literally meaning “the last bending air master”.

The right cartouche contains the characters 土火気水, which mean ‘earth, fire, air, water’.

I am a big admirer of Jed Henry’s art and all that he has done to sustain and spread the craft of traditional Japanese woodblock printing. I have been meaning to contact him about doing a print for our show for a while now, and also just to tell him how much I love his work. So I am overjoyed that he chose Avatar as the subject for one of his wonderful reinterpretations, the third beautiful image here. So cool! Thanks, Jed! I hope we connect soon.

Awesome cosplayers at the Fandom Society Cosplay Ball last night!

April 4, 2014

I had a fantastic time at the Fandom Society inaugural Cosplay Ball last night. Thanks to my buddies/co-hosts Giancarlo Volpe & Dante Basco for having me as a guest. HUGE THANKS to the ever-gracious Albert for lending me his great Fire Nation Sokka costume, to the equally ever-gracious Trini for lending his Fire Nation Aang costume to my friend and coworker Brandon Hoang, and to Avatar Mom for making those connections happen in the nick of time. And thanks to all the incredibly nice cosplayers I met! It was a pleasure. The event, held in a super slick giant club, went really well, with a robust attendance and a nice vibe. There were so many amazing cosplayers from a wide variety of fandoms, though it seemed like Attack on Titan had the biggest numbers. There were some awesome Avatar/Korra cosplayers as well, the photos of which I will post next. In the photos above: Dante Basco (top), Brandon Hoang (middle), and Giancarlo Volpe sans costume (bottom).

Well, I had been meaning to do something for Inktober all month and of course I leave it until I’m about to walk out of the office with less than two hours of Inktober left. Down to the wire as usual. It’s isn’t much, but well, there it is. And there’s always next year. Or Inkvember!

I’m up early putting the last pieces in place for my lecture at RISD (tonight, 10/14/13 at 7:00 in the Main Auditorium) and I came across this forgotten gem that I inked in 2007. I always imagined Mai kept giving the royal portrait artist the same note, over and over: “More black.”

Mike and I had lunch with Dante Basco (voice of Zuko & General Iroh the Younger) yesterday. It nice to take a break from the storm and reminisce on the Avatar days and craze, and catch up on the million-and-one things Dante is up to. The guy keeps himself busy. He is on Tumblr too, in case you didn’t know. But if you are into Homestuck, then you already knew that.

ZUKO

I stopped by Ryu Ki Hyun's office to say hi and saw these cool head studies that he had done on a drawing pad. He told me these were from last year's Comic Con, before the signing. His wife told him he better practice. HA! In the end they told us to stop including drawings at the signing because it was taking too long, which always makes us sad. Anyway, these drawings make me happy.

AMAZING UNCLE IROH! That’s his daughter as Zuko next to him. She introduced him to the series and talked him into cosplaying. He was really into it though, as anyone willing to carry a tea set around the convention floor has to be.

Our buddy Chandler, the publicist for The Track Team. He’s been talking about this Zuko cosplay for ages! Nice work, man!
P.S. I forgot to mention: I love the girl desperately crouching and hiding her face with the “art of” book. HA! She is like that in a few of my shots. She could have just turned the other way, but this technique draws a lot less attention.
EDIT: Oh, yeah! There are TWO girls hiding their faces with the book. I didn’t even notice the second. Maybe it is a good technique for blending into the background. Private detectives have employed it for ages!

Stinkeye Korra is great, but I also love the Zuko with the scar on the wrong side in the background, mad dogging the camera. He was a nice dude. I didn’t want to point it out. It must have looked right to him in the mirror. Or maybe he was Actor Zuko…? Doesn’t matter, he owned it with that mad dog. “I DARE YOU to mention my scar is on the wrong side.”
