BREAKING NEWS: The Legend of Korra co-creator Bryan Konietzko just shared this art with us!
It’s to announce that they will be screening the entire, long-awaited first episode of Book 2 at the San Diego Comic-Con Korra panel, Friday at 11:15am in Ballroom 20!
Get in line early!!

Hey everyone, we can finally tell you that we will be screening a full episode at the panel this year!  That’s right, the entire first episode of Book 2!  We can’t wait to show you.  Bryan did this awesome artwork, inspired by Korra’s battle with a dark spirit in that episode.
Also, nickanimationstudio has its own tumblr page now.  They plan to have a lot of cool, behind the scenes stuff of everything that goes on at the Nickelodeon studio where all the animated shows are made.

BIG NEWS! WE’RE SHOWING THE ENTIRE FIRST EPISODE OF BOOK 2 AT THE SDCC KORRA PANEL! I must say, I think if you are a fan of Korra and the Avatar universe in general, this panel is so chock-full it will make your head explode. We hope the Korra fans are filling the majority of the seats this year!
And I hope you dig my iPad sketch for the premiere Book 2 episode. I painted it on a flight back from Seattle a few months ago. Come to the panel and see Korra and this spirit dude throw down!
And definitely check out the new Nick Studios blog (nickanimationstudio.tumblr.com) if you want a peek into the behind-the-scenes culture where we work. There promises to be some cool and fun stuff on there.

I’m trying to get better at painting faces/heads, so here’s an iPad study from an incredible photo taken in Chicago in 1941 by Edwin Rosskam, found on one of my absolute favorite websites, Shorpy.com, an historical photo archive. We referenced Shorpy heavily for the development of Republic City in Book 1 of Korra. The rest of the source photo features a cool bicycle, but I still haven’t had the desire to ever draw or paint another bicycle after turning in my drawing requirement for RISD’s portfolio submission some 18 years ago. I recently did a Tumblr tag search for RISD and saw a lot of familiar bicycle drawings from a new generation of applicants. Speaking of history, I found this little write-up on the origin of the dreaded “RISD Bike.”

Sigh… I wrote a big, long thing and tried to post this a few minutes ago, but I guess I took too long to write it and I got timed out or something because it didn’t go through. I don’t feel like writing it all over again so here’s a summary: I’m sick. Jana Schirmer’s Photoshop portraits on her Facebook page are awesome. Here’s a self-portrait I did on the iPad while lying on the couch last night from a cell phone pic of what it looks like when my sinuses are about to explode.

30 [INCONSECUTIVE] DAY DRAWING/ART CHALLENGE — 1. Yourself or your persona.
I’ve been following Sachin Teng’s mind-bendingly beautiful and clever installments from this challenge for a while now at sachinteng.tumblr.com. Seems fun, so here I go! There’s no way I’ll complete the list in thirty days though, hence the “inconsecutive” addition to the title. I’ll be happy if I get through it within a year.

I WARNED YA BOUT THEM DOG PAINTINS

My first paying gig after graduating from RISD was a commission to do an oil painting of a family’s dogs. I loved it and have always thought if my animation career goes belly up I would be happy doing dog paintings all the time.

An inaugural random sketch of no one in particular using my new toys: I finally gave in and joined the Korra Crew Cool Kid Club and got an iPad, a Jot Touch pressure sensitive stylus, and Procreate.
EDIT: I suspect with these tools at my disposal I will henceforth be making and posting a high and frequent number of sketches of my dog sleeping. Prepare to unfollow me.
