This is one of my favorite Bolin drawings from the cabinets in the Korra production area, by Eugene Lee, in a style reminiscent of Koji Morimoto. Apparently Eugene drew it here so Bolin would stare into Colin’s office.

For some reason, this “tight rough” for the second piece of press art we released didn’t make it into the Korra art book, but I like it so I’m posting it here. I based it off of a storyboard panel of Joaquim’s from the premiere episode, and he did some further revisions on top of my drawing, which are included here in what you might call a “jam.” I wouldn’t call it that. Without wincing.
Sorry again for the lack of posts! Our production schedule is simply brutal as we are working on Books 2, 3, and 4 simultaneously, and I have little time for anything else once I try to fit “being a human being” in there. Such is the nature of TV production and its protracted, overlapping schedules… Despite the absence and the delays (which are all symptomatic of The Difficulty of Making Animation and little or nothing else), I would (as I have in the past) humbly ask you for your continued patience: It is a good year to be a Korra fan, and a lot of great stuff is coming down the pipeline that we are excited to announce (when we are permitted to announce it) and to share with you all. I’m excited to share with you the final cover art (Korra drawn by Joaquim Dos Santos and painted by me, with a background painting by Fred Stewart) for the upcoming Korra Book One: Air art book, published by our good friends at Dark Horse Books. This was a real labor of love (heavy on the labor) for Mike, Joaquim, and me and all those who helped as we put this book together, and we are so proud of all the great artists’ work inside and can’t wait to share it with all of you. The plan is to do one of these art books per “book” of Korra (so four total), which is daunting yet fantastic.

I was a guest on the latest episode of The Big Pull Podcast. My good buddy Kurt Mattila (director of the ATLA documentary Avatar Spirits, among many other great things) invited me to join him last week, along with my other good buddies Angela Marie Volpe and Giancarlo Volpe (ATLA director and Green Lantern: The Animated Series show runner), to discuss our top three episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, among many other topics, like being a show runner, Korra, and stuff. Lots of stuff, and more run-on sentences like the previous one. In fact, so many run-ons that Kurt had to split it into two parts.

From Wikipedia: Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects which are added in post production to enhance the quality of audio for films, television, video, video games, and radio. These reproduced sounds can be anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass. The best foley art is so well integrated into a film that it goes unnoticed by the audience. It helps to create a sense of reality within a scene.
Aran Tanchum, our good friend and longtime foley editor (for approximately the second half of Avatar, and all of Korra), has started a Tumblr blog about the art and process of foley. On the other side of the mic is Vinny Quisetti, the “foley walker,” the person performing the sounds to match the movement in the footage. Unfortunately, Aran can’t show clips from the series, but if you are interested in filmmaking, this is a good look into some techniques and tricks of the trade.

PixelDrip is putting together what promises to be a fantastic Korra fanart gallery show later this month, chock-full of art that people sent in physically and digitally. In addition to all the great art, there will be lots of fun activities and prizes packed into the two-day event. Mike and I, and some other Korra crew members, will likely be dropping by throughout the show. If you’re going to be in Los Angeles on March 23-24, and you’re a fan of Korra and you want to see some cool fanart (like this awesome piece by Claire Hummel) and hang out with other fans, get your tickets and come on down!
