It has been ages since I’ve had the time and energy to mess around with any digital painting, either on the Cintiq or the iPad. When I was digging around old files last night I came across a barely-started portrait attempt of Korra that I had based on a storyboard drawing of Ki-Hyun Ryu’s. I put a little bit more time into this evening, feeling rather rusty! That said, painting human faces is always a huge challenge for me, no matter how much I’ve been painting. Here is a detail of the work in progress.
Awesome cosplayers at the Fandom Society Cosplay Ball last night!
Getting excited for the Fandom Society Cosplay Ball tomorrow night! Hoping to see some cool Avatar/Korra-related costumes. I stumbled upon this great Korra in Chi-blocker disguise online here. Love this!
I made this as a thank you card from my dog to a friend. I think it is pretty much my favorite thing I’ve ever done.
Christine Bian just forwarded this great cosplay shot to me. Those noodles look good right about now…
HERE’S OUR BIG NEWS, STRAIGHT FROM JANET VARNEY! IF THIS POST GETS REBLOGGED 10,000 TIMES IN THE NEXT 12 HOURS, WE’LL RELEASE THE 1 HOUR BOOK 2 FINALE TONIGHT AT MIDNIGHT EST ON NICK.COM!

Let’s do this thing, Korra Nation!
Well, that escalated quickly. Looks like Chrimbus is coming early. You Korra fans are being rewarded for your online behavior. The last FOUR episodes of Book 2 are within your viewing pleasure this weekend. That is a big dose of Korra. I hope you enjoy the action-packed, emotional, cerebral, poetic onslaught! See you on the other side.
Major milestone for us today as we mixed the final episode of Book 2. FINALLY! You guys will see this in under two weeks, hot off the presses. This episode, and the remaining ones leading up to it, are sonic smorgasbords, thanks to Jeremy Zuckerman (music), Ben Wynn (sound design), Aran Tanchum (foley), and everyone working with them. Mike and I would especially like to thank our outstanding mixer, Adrian Ordonez (pictured above), at Levels Audio. OK, back to work on Books 3 & 4…
I am overwhelmingly pleased with tomorrow night’s episode, the story of Korra and Jinora’s venture into the Spirit World, “Chapter Ten: A New Spiritual Age,” exquisitely written by Tim Hedrick, skillfully directed by Ian Graham, and mind-bogglingly animated by Studio Mir. Lots of superlatives to throw around to everyone involved.
I did this illustration to celebrate my warm fuzzies for the episode, featuring calligraphy by S.L. Lee, PhD. Same time as previously-not-always, Friday at 8:00pm/7c.
In celebration of my friend Carli Davidson’s phenomenal new book SHAKE here are some photos I took of my dog Gunther doing his thing at a pool party this summer. Puppet Korra & Friends show off their copy which was generously gifted by Carli. And Lisa Yang’s wall decal photo of her dog, the Yam, barks out some love for our copies.
I CAN NOT HANDLE THE CUTE.
NOPE, STILL CAN’T HANDLE IT.
These are the children of a friend of a friend’s friend, an obviously stupendous parent named Ana, who made the Korra costume. I’m not sure where she got the Momo costume, but it is equally and ridiculously fantastic. I love Halloween. Thanks Awesome Family for sharing.
Some fantastic cosplayers that I shot at the Korra signing at NYCC.
Comic Con alert!
Check out this gorgeous poster of Korra and Wan, made exclusively for New York Comic Con (via Comics Alliance)
Then, tell us what questions YOU want answered at the Korra panel, where we’ll also be screening a brand new episode of LoK :)
Respond in the comments with your question for Bryan, Joaquim, Janet Varney (Korra) or PJ Byrne (Bolin).
What question do you want answered?!
This poster of Avatar Wan and Korra is what we’ll be giving away and signing at New York Comic Con. This one took a village: The rough was drawn by Joaquim Dos Santos and me; the cleanup was done by Christie Tseng, Angela Song Mueller, and Christine Bian; and I did the color. I’m really happy with how it came out, and I think it might be my favorite poster that we’ve ever done. Hopefully the printing goes well…
ok so what if instead of a polar bear-dog she had giant penguin
HA! Sorry Naga, I think we’re going to have to George Lucas you out of the show.
