Thanks to everyone who has followed this blog and supported my work this past year. I had no idea this would be the case when I took the Tumblr plunge, but making “personal” art pieces to post on here forced me to grow as an artist and has fed back into my “professional” work, and it has inspired me for the possibilities in my future endeavors. I deeply appreciate it, and hope you got something worthwhile out of this blog too. A huge thanks to all of the incredible artists I follow on here for the invaluable inspiration, and to the ATLA and LOK fans for all the spirited fanart, GIFs, cosplay, etc. You guys help to fuel us through the crazy process of bringing animation to life.
I wish you all the best in 2013. Happy New Year!

Driving home from work earlier this week, I saw this incredible cumulus cloud emerging from the twilight sky above the San Gabriel Mountains and I resolved to try to paint it. It seemed like the kind of moment in nature upon which Aang would meditate.

This is an update of sorts, based on a little concept I did almost exactly 10 years ago. I worked on it a few minutes at the end of each day this week. *Trying* to get better at digital painting. Hope you guys enjoy it. Have a great weekend!

I’m getting over being sick and fully out of it, so here’s a drawing from Brandon Hoang, who is a “Manager, Current Series Animation” on our show, and also one of the hardworking masterminds behind our Comic Con activities over the last few years. He is on the network side of things, and I never knew he drew. Then, the other day at the end of a meeting I looked down at his paper and saw this gem: Aang, by way of Charlie Brown, in a toga and/or in drag, airbending a sweet mini tornado. Now I know who to turn to when I’m behind on my artwork.

They recently did a remodel on the Nickelodeon Animation Studios and installed these snazzy four-high HD displays in the main lobby. They showcase the various Nick shows throughout the day. My friend Rohner Segnitz did a great job designing these awesome digital layouts for Korra and Avatar that frame the episodes. I worked my tail off on the Korra promo poses, and I must confess I love coming into the studio and having a 12-foot-tall Korra and Amon towering over me.

Here is an amazing piece of fanart by my friend Maria’s 5-year-old nephew Oscar. Top that!

As I mentioned in a post yesterday, I am gone for the next two weeks, and the blog will be silent during that time. I hope everyone (who can see it) enjoys the online preview of the first two episodes this weekend. The entire Korra crew poured their hearts, souls, blood, sweat, and tears into it and we all appreciate (and are blown away by) the overwhelming enthusiasm and eagerness from so many people who can’t wait to dive into this new story with us. Thanks for all the support! Have a great two weeks! I know I plan to…

And the hits just keep on coming! Wow… We are so lucky to have such passionate, dedicated fans of our work.

It’s been a long, rough week… It’s OK, Aang, just rest on your laurels, knock back a few bottles of ‘buch… You’ll feel better on Monday.
EDIT: Ha ha, so quick to judge! Those are bottles of kombucha, not beer. Aang is a fermented tea man. Only trace amounts of alcohol for him. It’s the grind that has worn him down, not the libation!

Thanks to Kevin Coppa for making this fantastic puppet, and especially for giving it to us. Although, as you can see, Mike is pretty attached to this one, so no one will stop you, Kevin, if you want to give *ME* a Korra puppet. I think it is only fair.

I found this while cleaning out an old cabinet. This is a rough for one of the three color illustrations Mike and I used in our pitch of Avatar: The Last Airbender. It is one of the earliest drawings I did of Aang and Appa, from April 18, 2002. It is crazy to think that Mike and I have been working on this project in one form or another for the past 10 years…
