I’m excited to share with you the final cover art (Korra drawn by Joaquim Dos Santos and painted by me, with a background painting by Fred Stewart) for the upcoming Korra Book One: Air art book, published by our good friends at Dark Horse Books. This was a real labor of love (heavy on the labor) for Mike, Joaquim, and me and all those who helped as we put this book together, and we are so proud of all the great artists’ work inside and can’t wait to share it with all of you. The plan is to do one of these art books per “book” of Korra (so four total), which is daunting yet fantastic.
Direct market on sale date: July 24, 2013.
Book market on sale date: August 6, 2013.
9” x 12” hardcover, 144 pages

After the finale premiere and series wrap-up

Joaquim Dos Santos(Director): My wife just kept squeezing my hand tighter and tighter and tighter and tighter and she looked over at me and said “This is the best thing you’ve been a part of” and I couldn’t agree more.

Giancarlo Volpe(Storyboard Artist): I felt for a moment there I got to just be purely a fan. THEY DID IT! Mike and Bryan did it! And I’ll start crying. I really thought they pulled it off.

Seung-Hyun Oh(Storyboard Director): We (storyboard artists) miss Avatar. We miss that time.

Michael Dante DiMartino: As a whole, I’m very proud of it. It is surreal to look back and be like, “Oh, that was 5 or 6 years of my life encapsulated in 22 minutes x 61 (episodes) or whatever that is!”

Bryan Konietzko: It’s satisfying. I look at it and there’s all these, “Awww, I wish we could have done that better”, “I wish that had turned out better” but I think it’s the cumulative effect of it. And the fans are really getting that sense of the world. That’s what’s important. Nickelodeon supported us and gave us so much freedom. We made the show we wanted to make. Mike and I just poured our hearts into it and luckily found all these amazing people who were willing to sacrifice as much as we were. I couldn’t be more proud of what we were able to accomplish.

:) And now Korra :D

Rest assured, I still have that shirt. Phew…

These are clips from the wonderful documentary about the making of Avatar: The Last Airbender called “Avatar Spirits,” directed by our good friend Kurt Mattila (who was roommates with Mike for about 10 years), and produced by Alex Dervin. We are very lucky to have such talented friends who were willing to squeeze in this project between big, fancy commercial jobs, to chronicle this very important chapter in our careers and lives and share it with the fans of the series. I believe the documentary is floating around online, and you can also find it as part of the ATLA Book 1 Collector’s Edition.

On the side, Kurt does a podcast called The Big Pull, about comics, movies, and TV. Giancarlo Volpe (looping in GIF form above, and on Tumblr here) is a frequent guest, Mike has been on there once or twice, and so has as our world famous internet comic sensation Liz Climo. Check it out!

Today, in a storyboard meeting, the ever-caricaturing Ryu Ki Hyun drew Mike/Bolin, Me/Mako, and Joaquim/Meelo.

I’ve been burning the candle at both ends, so no new cool art to show, not even a 10-minute Korra (which was actually planned as a 5-minute Korra, but took me 10 minutes, and looking at it now, I should’ve spent an extra 0.5 to lower her left pigtail thingy into the correct perspective, and maybe I will sometime). But there are plenty of these nifty, giant decals around the studio to share with you! This one is based on a cool piece of Pro-bending concept art Joaquim drew in the early development days on Korra. The SpongeBob crew gets to pass this one on their way to and from the bathroom.

I wish I could draw this “off model” on an iPad, or on anything for that matter.
2-cents:

Hey guys…….. Sorry this is so late….. I drew this up on my ipad last night but fell asleep before I could post it…… Sorry it’s so off model. I still have kind of a hard time drawing on that thing….. Although it’s becoming more comfortable.
So if you have not yet seen episode 4 “a voice in the night”……. Go watch it now or else Korra will beat you up!

THE LEGEND OF KORRA PREMIERE PARTY, APRIL 14th, 2012
Joaquim Dos Santos (co-executive producer) and Ryu Ki Hyun (supervising producer). These two fellas with the party hair co-directed all twelve episodes in Korra’s Book 1, and then some, and then some more, and some more after that.

I barely had time the other day to draw this when the premier date was announced. Decided to color it up a bit before I left tonight. Kind of a repost I suppose.
 Everyone have a good weekend!

So much to reblog today! A killer drawing from Joaquim to wrap up a whirlwind week…

Joaquim’s character posing is always top-notch.
2-cents:

Hey guys….. Here are a couple more notebook sketches of Korra I did during a handout meeting the other night. She’s ready to fight!

Thanks to Kevin Coppa for making this fantastic puppet, and especially for giving it to us. Although, as you can see, Mike is pretty attached to this one, so no one will stop you, Kevin, if you want to give *ME* a Korra puppet. I think it is only fair.

SECOND EDIT: Boy, am I old… I can’t get the link to go to the sign-up page. But there seem to be plenty of functioning links in the notes, so use those instead. Thanks, you young whippersnappers!

Retakes, retakes, retakes, retakes, retakes… They take up the most time, and drain the most energy. A necessary evil in the animation process. Pictured: Jeff Adams (our longtime editor and a recent recipient of an Annie award), Joaquim Dos Santos (co-executive producer), Lauren Montgomery (supervising producer), and some guy.

Joaquim Dos Santos, if you don’t know already, is the co-executive producer on Korra, the co-director (along with Ki Hyun Ryu) of all twelve episodes of Korra’s Book 1, and the artist who did the original concept design of Korra. He’s also a good friend, the person who got me into MMA, and actually the person who introduced me to Tumblr. His internet handle is 2-cents, and here’s a sketch he did the other day. Basically, I’m here to tell you he is awesome and a pillar of this production.

Here is a sketch I did of Korra to warm up for a full day of drawing Korra!
