The deeper we get into the Korra production, the more horizontal Joaquim’s posture gets in animatic meetings.
Comic Con alert!
Check out this gorgeous poster of Korra and Wan, made exclusively for New York Comic Con (via Comics Alliance)
Then, tell us what questions YOU want answered at the Korra panel, where we’ll also be screening a brand new episode of LoK :)
Respond in the comments with your question for Bryan, Joaquim, Janet Varney (Korra) or PJ Byrne (Bolin).
What question do you want answered?!
This poster of Avatar Wan and Korra is what we’ll be giving away and signing at New York Comic Con. This one took a village: The rough was drawn by Joaquim Dos Santos and me; the cleanup was done by Christie Tseng, Angela Song Mueller, and Christine Bian; and I did the color. I’m really happy with how it came out, and I think it might be my favorite poster that we’ve ever done. Hopefully the printing goes well…
Michael DiMartino (co-creator), Joaquim Dos Santos (co-executive producer), Ki-Hyun Ryu (supervising producer), and I are going to be at the Barnes & Noble in the Grove L.A. on Thursday, August 15 at 7:00 PM (one week from tomorrow) to do a (short) talk and a (longer) signing of our Dark Horse "The Legend of Korra: Art of the Animated Series" book. This is a great opportunity for anyone in the L.A. area who couldn’t make it down to San Diego Comic-Con. It will be nice and casual, and we’ll sign books until they kick us out! Hope to see you there! If there is enough time Ryu will do a mean drawing of you!
Joaquim Dos Santos, co-executive producer on Korra, will be joining us for the panel, as well as both the Nick booth signing on Friday and the Dark Horse booth signing on Saturday at 1:00. Mike, Joaquim, and I are VERY excited that Dark Horse was able to move up the release of the Korra Book 1 art book (which Joaquim co-wrote with Mike and me) so it is available at San Diego Comic-Con, instead of one week after like it was originally scheduled. Now you can get ‘em and we can sign ‘em for you!

Awesome drawing by Joaquim! All the info is here for our various signings. Hope to see you there and good luck fighting those crowds!
Thanks for giving the 411, Joaquim! And it is great to see you drawing for your Tumblr again!
I’m excited to share with you the final cover art (Korra drawn by Joaquim Dos Santos and painted by me, with a background painting by Fred Stewart) for the upcoming Korra Book One: Air art book, published by our good friends at Dark Horse Books. This was a real labor of love (heavy on the labor) for Mike, Joaquim, and me and all those who helped as we put this book together, and we are so proud of all the great artists’ work inside and can’t wait to share it with all of you. The plan is to do one of these art books per “book” of Korra (so four total), which is daunting yet fantastic.
Direct market on sale date: July 24, 2013.

After the finale premiere and series wrap-up
Joaquim Dos Santos(Director): My wife just kept squeezing my hand tighter and tighter and tighter and tighter and she looked over at me and said “This is the best thing you’ve been a part of” and I couldn’t agree more.
Giancarlo Volpe(Storyboard Artist): I felt for a moment there I got to just be purely a fan. THEY DID IT! Mike and Bryan did it! And I’ll start crying. I really thought they pulled it off.
Seung-Hyun Oh(Storyboard Director): We (storyboard artists) miss Avatar. We miss that time.
Michael Dante DiMartino: As a whole, I’m very proud of it. It is surreal to look back and be like, “Oh, that was 5 or 6 years of my life encapsulated in 22 minutes x 61 (episodes) or whatever that is!”
Bryan Konietzko: It’s satisfying. I look at it and there’s all these, “Awww, I wish we could have done that better”, “I wish that had turned out better” but I think it’s the cumulative effect of it. And the fans are really getting that sense of the world. That’s what’s important. Nickelodeon supported us and gave us so much freedom. We made the show we wanted to make. Mike and I just poured our hearts into it and luckily found all these amazing people who were willing to sacrifice as much as we were. I couldn’t be more proud of what we were able to accomplish.
:) And now Korra :D
Rest assured, I still have that shirt. Phew…
These are clips from the wonderful documentary about the making of Avatar: The Last Airbender called “Avatar Spirits,” directed by our good friend Kurt Mattila (who was roommates with Mike for about 10 years), and produced by Alex Dervin. We are very lucky to have such talented friends who were willing to squeeze in this project between big, fancy commercial jobs, to chronicle this very important chapter in our careers and lives and share it with the fans of the series. I believe the documentary is floating around online, and you can also find it as part of the ATLA Book 1 Collector’s Edition.
On the side, Kurt does a podcast called The Big Pull, about comics, movies, and TV. Giancarlo Volpe (looping in GIF form above, and on Tumblr here) is a frequent guest, Mike has been on there once or twice, and so has as our world famous internet comic sensation Liz Climo. Check it out!
Today, in a storyboard meeting, the ever-caricaturing Ryu Ki Hyun drew Mike/Bolin, Me/Mako, and Joaquim/Meelo.
I’ve been burning the candle at both ends, so no new cool art to show, not even a 10-minute Korra (which was actually planned as a 5-minute Korra, but took me 10 minutes, and looking at it now, I should’ve spent an extra 0.5 to lower her left pigtail thingy into the correct perspective, and maybe I will sometime). But there are plenty of these nifty, giant decals around the studio to share with you! This one is based on a cool piece of Pro-bending concept art Joaquim drew in the early development days on Korra. The SpongeBob crew gets to pass this one on their way to and from the bathroom.
Hey, Korra Nation! We just got our hands on the most amazing drawings from Co-Exec Producer & Director, Joaquim ‘2-cents’ Dos Santos. As of June 30th, the top 5 highest scoring Korra Nation members will each get one of these originals. Check out the epicness below:
Joaquim set aside the massive HD Cintiq and threw down on some good ol’ fashioned paper for these original art prizes. Killer stuff!
I wish I could draw this “off model” on an iPad, or on anything for that matter.
Hey guys…….. Sorry this is so late….. I drew this up on my ipad last night but fell asleep before I could post it…… Sorry it’s so off model. I still have kind of a hard time drawing on that thing….. Although it’s becoming more comfortable.
So if you have not yet seen episode 4 “a voice in the night”……. Go watch it now or else Korra will beat you up!
THE LEGEND OF KORRA PREMIERE PARTY, APRIL 14th, 2012
Joaquim Dos Santos (co-executive producer) and Ryu Ki Hyun (supervising producer). These two fellas with the party hair co-directed all twelve episodes in Korra’s Book 1, and then some, and then some more, and some more after that.
