This is one of my favorite Bolin drawings from the cabinets in the Korra production area, by Eugene Lee, in a style reminiscent of Koji Morimoto. Apparently Eugene drew it here so Bolin would stare into Colin’s office.

For some reason, this “tight rough” for the second piece of press art we released didn’t make it into the Korra art book, but I like it so I’m posting it here. I based it off of a storyboard panel of Joaquim’s from the premiere episode, and he did some further revisions on top of my drawing, which are included here in what you might call a “jam.” I wouldn’t call it that. Without wincing.

Sorry again for the lack of posts! Our production schedule is simply brutal as we are working on Books 2, 3, and 4 simultaneously, and I have little time for anything else once I try to fit “being a human being” in there. Such is the nature of TV production and its protracted, overlapping schedules… Despite the absence and the delays (which are all symptomatic of The Difficulty of Making Animation and little or nothing else), I would (as I have in the past) humbly ask you for your continued patience: It is a good year to be a Korra fan, and a lot of great stuff is coming down the pipeline that we are excited to announce (when we are permitted to announce it) and to share with you all. Thanks, sincerely!

I’m excited to share with you the final cover art (Korra drawn by Joaquim Dos Santos and painted by me, with a background painting by Fred Stewart) for the upcoming Korra Book One: Air art book, published by our good friends at Dark Horse Books. This was a real labor of love (heavy on the labor) for Mike, Joaquim, and me and all those who helped as we put this book together, and we are so proud of all the great artists’ work inside and can’t wait to share it with all of you. The plan is to do one of these art books per “book” of Korra (so four total), which is daunting yet fantastic.

Joaquim just forwarded this to me. HOLY MOLY! Watching something like this makes me forget all the pain of making animation, at least momentarily. What a joy. Can’t wait to see the whole piece.

P.S. I have since been told this is the whole piece, that it is a trailer for an upcoming comic. Sigh… that’s cool, but it would obviously be great to see this as a complete animated film.

I was a guest on the latest episode of The Big Pull Podcast. My good buddy Kurt Mattila (director of the ATLA documentary Avatar Spirits, among many other great things) invited me to join him last week, along with my other good buddies Angela Marie Volpe and Giancarlo Volpe (ATLA director and Green Lantern: The Animated Series show runner), to discuss our top three episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, among many other topics, like being a show runner, Korra, and stuff. Lots of stuff, and more run-on sentences like the previous one. In fact, so many run-ons that Kurt had to split it into two parts.

Here is a link to an elegant and heartfelt piece by George Takei in the wake of the senseless attack on the Boston Marathon yesterday, echoing many of my own thoughts and feelings. Obviously you don’t need to be a marathon runner, or anything other than a decent human being, to feel the depths of this tragedy. My heart goes out to the victims of this heinous crime, which was an affront to a benevolent endeavor: those who had their lives stolen from them and their families; those who were wounded, maimed, and lost limbs; and those witnesses who were physically unscathed but will surely bear psychological wounds for the rest of their lives. I am currently training for my first marathon, and my sisters and I will be raising money for those affected by this attack. I will post more updates regarding our fundraising efforts in the coming months. And to all my fellow runners, keep running.
